Sailor Moon The 90's Edition: Best Sailor Moon Episodes
10.) "The Shining Power of a Star: Chibi-Chibi's Transformation"(Season 5)
- What's the Plot?: The founding member of the Three Lights Fan-club notices Usagi's familiarity with the Three Lights and challenges her to a game of softball. She must win to continue associating with Seiya. After Seiya trains Usagi, the game starts. Before the final inning, Sailor Lead Crow attacks the opposing team's captain. Usagi transforms to save her, but Sailor Aluminium Siren sees her, decides that Usagi holds the true Star Seed, and attacks her. Chibi Chibi appears as a Sailor Soldier, providing the new power for a much stronger and more powerful attack, Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss, Eternal Sailor Moon uses to defeat the phage. Later, Usagi makes the game-winning catch.-- Now I will write reviews on the whole seasons of Sailor Moon, and let me make it clear right now, that Season 5 is not my favorite. And I will explain why in my future review. But if you had to twist my arm for me to find a good episode then I would have to say it was the one where Usagi plays baseball. Consider how surreal that sounds. Usagi playing baseball! So apparently the president of the TL fan club can't stand to see Usagi hanging out with Seiya cause she think's Usagi is too unladylike. She calls poor Usagi a monkey girl too! So to settle the argument, Usagi must play baseball even though she sucks at it. I like how Usagi is making it very clear to Seiya and pretty much everyone else that she already has a boyfriend (Mamoru). I really love how sneaky and fangirlish the inner senshi are. Even Ami is letting her inner fan-girl out when it comes to the Three Lights. The episode did a great job on giving this school life feel to the series, something at least I felt, has been lacking since season 1. After all, things got very serious with seasons 2 and 3 (and season 4 was in la la land) so it's been a while for Usagi and the gang to be seen as ordinary school girls again. I really enjoy that. Usagi's friendship with Seiya grows but there are no ROMANCE people! Give that up! I also really like how Chibi Chibi's mystery slowly unveils with Usagi wondering who this little girl really is. If only the season ended with a better explanation on who Chibi Chibi was. Another good point was the fan club president who had the longest green hair I have ever seen. Only bad point is the monster is horribly designed. Yes, it was a baseball theme monster, suitable to the episode but god it's still horrible. Overall the episode got good laughs out of me and I enjoy the funniest situation Usagi gotten herself into.
- What's the Plot?: Queen Beryl is increasingly furious with Jadeite for his repeated failures; he starts up a theme park, but the sailor senshi notices a large number of disappearances. Usagi and Rei, who is now Sailor Mars, begin their combative friendship.-- By far this episode was memorable for me and I could remember every scene and quote made. It had a great monster who will be in a future SM list (hint hint). So people are disappearing at a Disneyland-like amusement park and it's up to Usagi, Ami, and Rei to find out if the Dark Kingdom is behind the mysterious events. By this point, Rei had barely joined the senshi gang and it's obvious she's not used to dealing with Usagi. The two have to deal with each other's annoying flaws and still do senshi duty. The funniest scene that I still remember and enjoy no matter how many years pass, is the scene where Rei and Usagi are fighting over whether or not the mechanical animals controlled by the Dream Princess are safe. This happens when Rei sees a boy get on an animal and takes him off but Usagi puts the boy back on the animal. This becomes a tug of war between them with the poor boy being pulled until the boy's mother comes along piss off! Turns out the Dream Princess isn't good at all and we get Murid , a creepy doll demon who has a pleasant voice but very creepy eyes and breathe that causes illusions. When the youma pulls her head into her body and starts to spin, and creates a creepy music, I won't lie, that was scary. It's like the moment you see that scene, you're like "holy cow we're in another ballgame now!" Usagi easily gets fooled by the demon and Mars gets injured due to it. The senshi have to stop bickering in order to fight the doll creature and combine their powers. I really like how Sailor Mars and Sailor Moon had to come up with teamwork and get used to each other as warriors. It will take a while for them to be completely comfortable but this is a good start. Naturally, Mamoru is around and we see Rei developing a crush on him. Rei also shows good perception because she nails it right by exclaiming that Mamoru looks like Tuxedo Kamen. Ami gets into danger but still provides help by mentioning the youma's main source of power is the apple. There were some really funny moments and the episode ends with Usagi losing her ice cream. The fighting scenes were good and the monster was amazing. Even the scenes were the senshi had to deal with the illusions was cool. It may have been a filler episode but it does what most filler episodes don't do. It's fun and easy to watch.
- What's the Plot?: Rei goes into songwriting for a festival at her school. Ail and Ann target the event and find themselves unwittingly becoming part of the festivities. Sailor Mars gains a much stronger and more powerful.- In my opinion, the Ali and Ann story arch was far better than the Black Moon arc only because it comes up with episodes like this. We get a better look into Rei's school which is rare cause she goes to a different school compare to Ami, Usagi, and Mako-chan and the, for the most part, the series focuses on Usagi's school. So this episode already gets points for starting in a fresh setting. This is the episode where Rei sings her signature song "Eien No Melody" aka "Eternal Melody". If you grew up with the dub like I have then you would also know about the replacement song "Oh Starry Night" both songs are amazing. Have nothing against either one. I thought it was clever for the dub staff to come up with a song that sounds almost like the original. We get a pretty amazing look at Rei. We see how much she struggled to make her music and it's obvious she never made music before but she stuck to it. A great message to send to young children. The festival was cool, just to let it be known, I love festival episodes, and seeing Ali and Ann get stuck into being models for a sci-fi fashion show was funny. Very ironic since we see aliens dressing up as aliens! lol The monster or "cardian" is good too. It's supposed to be this mermaid creature and it uses its hair to attack and drain energy. The battle was pretty standard. The senshi attack but the monster gets the upper hand. It destroys Rei's music sheets and naturally she gets pissed because all her hard work is gone, she summons a new attack "Fire Soul Bird", the monster is weakened and Sailor Moon finishes it off. We see the Moonlight Knight, (yeah I'm not a fan about this guy, couldn't we just had Mamoru get his memories back already? this whole Moonlight Knight business is too dorky). Besides the standard fighting, all the real gold behind this episode is just the comedy and awesome music this episode provides. We still get good character development but we also get good ti bits of fun too. A must watch episode.
- What's the Plots?: A Cardian attack during a cherry-blossom viewing renders Usagi powerless and her friends helpless until Queen Serenity uses the Silver Crystal with Usagi's brooch, giving her the Crystal Star Compact that is activated by saying Moon Crystal Power, Make Up- and a new much stronger wand known as the Cutie Moon Rod that activates the "Moon Princess Halation" attack./Chibiusa tries to go back to the future because she feels that she doesn't belong in the present, but Koan and Berthier surprise and attack her. She manages to escape, but later Rubeus and the Sisters battle against Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Guardians, who try to protect Chibiusa. - Ok, this is gonna be the first two episode parter in my list because both episodes have powerful bad-ass scenes. Both episodes are within the same season. One is in the aliens arch and the other is in the black moon arch. So first up is the episode where Usagi gets her new brooch and wand and yes it's very different compared to the manga version. In this episode, it shows that the spirit of Queen Serenity gives Usagi the Cutie Moon Rod but in the manga, it was created by the love that Usagi and Mamoru had for one another. How do I feel about the change? To be honest I don't mind. I felt this episode sums up the inner crisis Usagi had for the first two seasons. which is "I just want to be an ordinary girl, I've defeated evil already why do I have to do it again?" It's an understandable conflict. After all, Usagi is still a teenager! Being a superhero isn't easy and Usagi feels she can't go through with it anymore. So when her friends are in trouble and she can't summon the power to transform, it's because of this inner conflict. So by having her be visited by Queen Serenity who encourages her to be proud that she's a hero and not to live in fear is powerful stuff we're getting here. So to have Queen Serenity give Usagi the upgrade power rod makes more sense in this case, and I feel it was well played. Best scene from this episode is when Sailor Moon is rising from the portal telling the cardian that she's gonna start kicking some ass (ok I'm paraphrasing a bit, but you get the idea what I mean.) The monster Racy is pretty good too, a cherry blossom demon creature. Nicely done./ The other episode is one I'm sure is on a lot of people's best lists. This is one where we see the battle between the sailor senshi and the ayakashi sisters (spectre sisters in English). It's the battle of the century (the 90s) and we as fans ate it up. Koan vs Mars, Berthier vs. Mercury, Petz vs Jupiter, and Calaveras vs. Venus! The very first magical girl battle royal! this is one of those rare times when I wish the manga had did the same thing as the anime. Oh sure the manga did have a showdown with the senshi and the witches 5 but to be honest the showdown with the ayakashi sisters was just more badass. Meanwhile, Sailor Moon is up against Rubeus, (another thing the anime did better than the manga, Rubeus actually does something like fighting). The episode was also important because Chibi-Usa finally reveals who she is and what the enemies want with her. We get an idea on how lonely Chibi-Usa is, the fact she crawls to Usagi's bed and embarrassingly wets it is a sad yet sympathetic moment I had with Chibi-Usa. She's just a sad lonely child but the way the dub made her so annoying and jerkish, I could understand why most SM fans couldn't see the sad side of her. We also get a glimpse at Neo Queen Serenity so the episode ends with a mighty large cliffhanger. I could remember watching this back when it was on Toonami and getting excited about the next episode. The dubbing of this episode was ok but what made it sorta weird was the replacing of the "Ai No Senshi " (Warriors of Love) with a weird boy song "She's got the Power!" Also one of the few episodes where we don't see a monster!
- What's the Plots?: Mimete attempts to create a Daimon by herself, throwing the entire Tomoe house into another dimension. The Guardians enter the dimension and are defeated by a game-master Daimon named U-Ikasaman. Hotaru manages to assist in her defeat by the use of a bluff./Ami investigates the Mugen Academy, where she meets Viluy, the fourth of the Witches 5. Viluy attempts to use her nanorobots to steal pure hearts from entrance exam takers. But after her battle, her own microscopic robots turn against her, destroying her in the process. - Another two parter better get used to these! The first episode to discuss is a filler but holy hell was it funny! I got to give the writers some respect because yes this episode had no real point to the main story plot, it still gave us a creative situation for the senshi to be in. We get that whole "accidentally working with the enemy" situation with Tomoe as he needs the senshi's help to save his home. We see Chibi-usa's and Hotura's friendship grow amazingly. The monster is cool, I think to be the first monster to have such a cunning and intelligent mind. She wasn't even trying to kill the senshi she just wanted to have them as playmates forever. The design is pretty smart too. The changing dimensions cause the senshi very much stress, however, causes me to laugh to tears. I like how Hotaru opens her dresser drawer and sees it's full of fish. The one on one games the senshi plays with the monster was funny too. Everyone gets capture so it's up to Chibi-Usa and Hotaru to take down with a card game. Chibi usa gets a win by emotionally screwing with the monster and Hotaru gets a new sense of confidence by winning the overall game. I consider this both a fun episode with some hints to the main story line./ Let's talk about the other episode showcasing Ami! Now, this episode actually is a chapter adaptation straight from the manga, and with only one or two changes, it's pretty damn accurate. Overall Ami decides to investigate Mugen Infinity College and since she's a good student, she could enter without suspicion thrown on her. She goes into conflict with Yui Bidou and is found out to be a sailor senshi. Hell, she even gets very close to where the enemy's home base is. Neptune and Uranus show up and luckily their not as douchy to Ami. The episode takes this what's the true meaning of science storyline. Yui Bidou or Viluy, one of the witches 5 think the goal of science to get absolute power and make weaker life forms slaves. Ami, of course, thinks that science should help benefit all living things. The two blue nerds go at it and Viluy plays dirty by using mosaic bluster which are nanomachines that slowly eat Mercury alive, causing her great pain. Luckily the rest of the senshi arrive and Mercury is saved. Viluy makes one more attempt to kill the senshi but Sailor Moon defeats the nanomachines back onto Viluy who is slowly reduce to nothing. Now in the manga, Viluy is killed by Uranus but I really like the death she had in the 90's anime. The very machines she used to harm others ends up destroying her, what's worse, there was really no way to save her. The senshi sadly had to watch her die. That's pretty hardcore right there. The overall message that Ami had tried to tell Viluy was that when you abuse science, terrible consequences can happen but those words came too late to Viluy. Once more the senshi get a small inside look into the main enemies hideout but the enemy manages to escape. I really like this episode. Ami was pretty badass, for once she's allowed to shine by showing off her amazing intellect.
- Chibi-Usa, doubtful of Pegasus' friendship as he hasn't told her about himself, questions him. Pegasus leaves as he cannot reveal anything yet. During a conversation with Usagi, Chibi-Usa realizes that there are certain things that have to remain secret, and Pegasus returns to her. /Tiger's Eye targets Chibiusa's art teacher, who had dreamed of being a teacher while she was a child but cannot communicate with children as well as she used to. - Another two-parter I'm giving you guys. Call it cheating I don't care. Ok in this episode Chibi-usa is looking for information and Pegasus wants her to just trust and not ask too much. While I understand where Pegasus is coming from, I have to wonder, how bad would it be if Chibi-Usa knew about everything? Wouldn't that be more helpful to her so she could be more prepared? I never like the whole "Keeping secrets for your safety" plotline. I could understand if Chibi-Usa is hesitated on telling Usagi and the others about Pegasus, but if Pegasus is gonna have Chibi-Usa protect him, he should just tell her what's up. The biggest reason I added this episode to the list is that it was super fun. I wouldn't call it a total filler because the story behind Pegasus is questioned, it still has this random story about a boy (who's Chibi-Usa's friend) wants to learn how to fly and the Amazoness Quartet target him and we got a crazy looking elephant lemure (who has a decent design: Elephant Girl strikes!) And to be honest this episode was my first SM episode, it was the Sailor Moon S movie that got me invested but this was the first episode I got to look into./ Onto the other episode, we still get more investment of the relationship between Chibi-Usa and Pegasus. I have to say, this whole entire season is devoted to these two characters and to be fair, the investment pays off. We see how much Chibi-Usa wants to protect her friend, even if she doesn't understand the whole story. We see that a lemure is trying to temp Chibi-Usa to enslaved Pegasus but she refuses. She saw Pegasus as her friend and not an object to control. While I won't lie, it was hard for me to like this pink chick in season 2, season 4 redeem her in a way to me. ( Sailor Moon Crystal redeem her further btw) The story itself is pretty much filler. The Amazon trio targets an art teacher just to lure Pegasus into a trap and we get a basic looking lemure who could control dreams and sleep. So nothing groundbreaking. But it's just that moment when the lemure tries to convince Chibi-Usa to "give in to the dark side", other words trap Pegasus, she refuses and shows what a good and increasingly developed character she is.
4.) Premonition of the Apocalypse: The Mysterious New Guardians Appear (Season 3)
- What's the Plot?: After experiencing apocalyptic visions, Rei is attacked by a powerful monster called a Daimon that Sailor Moon is unable to fight after it disables her brooch, reversing her transformation. The Daimon is defeated by a pair of mysterious new warriors, leaving the girls to despondently realize that a new conflict has begun.-The first episode of season 3 was truly a game changer for Sailor Moon fans. Think about it. We get the first glimpse of a new enemy. The enemy is powerful enough that Usagi couldn't defeat it and everyone was also getting their butts kicked. We see the first shadow figures of two NEW senshi!(holy cow more senshi?!) and even the art style is different compared to season 1 and 2. Season 3 just started out strong and had a major impact on my love for anime. I really felt that season 3 was the darker more serious season. Rei's visions are crazy mind-blowing. Think about it she keeps having visions that her friends and the world are being destroyed by a dark entity. Just fun fact, in the manga, it wasn't just Rei who had these visions, Mamoru also had them. We see Professor Tomoe for the first time, and I have to say, when I first saw this episode, I thought he was a complete psycho! Seriously, he was always maniacally laughing! We also see Kaolinite, the redhead with the massive rack. (Being a teenager I couldn't help but look at her boobs!) The monster also had a pretty badass design. I think the animators really wanted to showcase how strong the monster was. Considering it was fast enough to stop Rei from transforming, took down the rest of the inner senshi with ease and wasn't affected by Usagi's main attack. The dub even gave this monster a witty attitude. I think the best dub line the monster had when it says to Sailor Moon "All that twirling and dancing will get you nowhere!" I just snorted with giggles hearing that! However, she was a jerk too. She even beat down Luna and Artemis! Poor Kitties! We also see the first appearance of the pure heart crystal. Now originally, the Death Busters were simply trying to take people's souls and put Daimon monsters into the body. Sorta like an "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" storyline going on. However the studio decided to change the storyline, so instead of looking for souls and bodies to infect with their demon seeds, the Death Busters now are looking for the three talismans and apparently, these talismans are in heart crystals. While the anime's heart crystal plot device was ok, I kinda like the original manga's plot device a little more, because it made a little more sense. The Death Busters were aliens who were trying to invade earth and to do it by invading people's bodies and stealing their souls, just sounds more logical. Also while they were also looking for the talismans, they only were looking because Kaolinite had a premonition that the talismans would bring them destruction, not salvation. So she was looking for the talismans to destroy them. Ok, enough rambling, back to the episode. Rei's and Usagi's friendship is showcased here as Rei reminds Usagi of her good qualities. The episode ended on a major foreboding nature with Usagi and company scared that a new enemy has come to the surface. Once I saw this episode I just had to binge watch the rest of the season.
3.) The Shining Silver Crystal: The Moon Princess Appears (Season 1)
2.) Shadows of Destruction! The Awakening of the Messiah of Silence!/ Awakening of the Messiah of Silence? Stars of Destiny(Season 3)
- What's the Plot?: The new guardian, Sailor Venus, is also school girl Minako Aino. Forbidden by Queen Beryl to kill Tuxedo Mask, Zoisite challenges him to duel for the Rainbow Crystals. Usagi follows him, and they are forced to reveal their identities to each other.- If you ever got the privilege to watch Sailor Moon for the first time without the hype and cultural knowledge that most people do today, then this episode would have been a treat for you. Now as I may have mentioned before, I saw the 90's anime before I got to read the manga (the sailor moon manga was actually much difficult to obtain back when I was younger). So I saw this episode and I really felt I was on the edge of my seat just because the situation continued to escalate on a high level. Mamoru goes to the Tokyo tower (in the anime dub it's the star tower but let's face it, the Tokyo tower is always a must for awesome fight scenes!) So Mamoru is planning to get the rest of the rainbow crystals from Zoisite (vices versa with Zoisite). Naturally, Usagi is there and our heroes find themselves trapped by Zoisite (which in hindsight they should have been more prepared since Mamoru kinda knew there was gonna be a trap) There are the traditional heroes reveal each other. However, to be honest, I really like the manga's version of this better. Sailor Moon had just defeated a bunch of youma, pass out and Tuxedo Kamen takes her to his place. She wakes up and Mamoru greets her still as Tuxedo Kamen just without the mask. Sailor Moon picks up the mask and places it on Mamoru and exclaims "why haven't I never seen it before?". SQUEAL! I really just love that scene! It was emotional and powerful and Mamoru already had piece together Usagi is Sailor Moon. So what did the anime did? It was simple, Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon and Mamoru "transforms into" Tuxedo Kamen. ok, I'm pretty sure Mamoru is not a magical girl, so he should put on his hero suit like us normal people. Ok, let's get to the best scene of all! Kamen is wounded badly by Zoisite. Sailor Moon is mortified because she had always loved Kamen. The shock causes her to remember her entire past and it's revealed that she's the moon princess. The scene is so emotionally strong. The rainbow crystals merge into the silver crystal. Now, not to sound like a broken record, but the manga was far better at revealing the silver crystal. The moment Usagi remembers her past, she becomes the moon princess and one of her tears transforms into the silver crystal. I thought that made more sense, the idea that this powerful crystal was within Usagi, and there is this physical proof of her strength. Also, the whole rainbow crystal story arch was just to make more episodes and expand the anime. Also another cool tidbit, in the manga, Sailor Moon's tiara kept morphing into a crescent shape until when she does remember her past, the tiara breaks apart and shows the crescent moon mark, revealing that she's the moon princess. I really did wish that happened in the 90's anime. However, gotta love the music the anime gave. Both the sub and the dub songs are great! The original song is Maboroshi no ginzuishō which has a sweet music box melody, and the dub song My Only Love a haunting love song. Bonus points for them!.
2.) Shadows of Destruction! The Awakening of the Messiah of Silence!/ Awakening of the Messiah of Silence? Stars of Destiny(Season 3) - What's the plot?: The last of the Witches 5, Cyprine steals pure hearts from Mugen Academy students, and the Sailor Guardians engage Cyprine, and her alter-ego, Ptilol, in a showdown. Meanwhile, Chibi-Usa is abducted by the recently resurrected Kaolinite, and her pure heart is stolen by Mistress 9, having taken over Hotaru's body, which allows her to awaken as the Messiah of Silence./The Sailor Guardians visit a planetarium, where a man is attacked by a Daimon. The symbol of Saturn appears on Hotaru's forehead, and she attacks the Daimon. However, Sailor Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto attack Hotaru, since she is both Sailor Saturn, the Sailor Guardian of Silence, Ruin, and Birth, and also possessed by the Messiah of Silence. Super Sailor Moon takes the blow to protect Hotaru. -On the Shadows of Destruction episode, it was both powerful and grim. First, the senshi take on the last remaining witch from the Deathbusters, Cyprine. For those who didn't understand about Cyprine, she has the ability to split herself into two people, so pretty much like cloning. So Ptilol is not Cyprine's twin sister, she is more of a Cyprine clone. I'm not sure if anyone else got confused by that, but just to clarify. So the senshi fights Cyprine and the battle is pretty damn good. In manga Cyprine used a spell to have the senshi fight each other, that didn't happen in the anime but the fight we see is still good. One thing that has gotten me confused since the fight with Viluy, is that the witches 5 seem to have a crush on Professor Tomoe and they seem to hate Kaolinite. Viluy was straight up rude and Cyprine gave Kaolinite snide remarks. I just wanted to point out that in the manga, the witches 5 were very obedient to Kaolinite (who was a Magnus, a stronger witch, I think). Kaolinite was pretty angry to see her witches get killed. Speaking of the manga, the scene where Chibi-usa gets her heart crystal taken away by Hotaru, in the anime, was similar to the manga. It's not a shot by shot close adaptation. The location has been changed and technically Hotaru steals Chibi-Usa's silver crystal in the manga, but to be honest I love the anime adaptation still. The scene where Chibi-usa sees Hotaru and even while her heart crystal is being taken, she is still glad to see her friend. It's super sad and a tear-jerking scene. Hotaru's transformation into Mistress 9 was pretty good too. The haunting music playing in the background really gives that ominous dreadful feeling. If anything Kaolinite's death was a letdown. In the anime, she is simply electrocuted and killed, because Mistress 9 states that the woman served her purpose. However, in the manga, Kaolinite becomes a monster and tries to kill all the senshi. Her true desire was to replace Mistress 9 and become Pharaoh 90's partner. However, despite that, the episode was great. The fight with the last witch and the climax of finally seeing Mistress 9./ This episode came before the one I mention above. We still have Mimete as the main witch to deal with. Basically, the senshi go to this planetarium with Hotaru. The inner and outer senshi are still at odds with each other and it's obvious that the outer senshi know something about Hotaru but aren't saying a word. Rei is still having her apocalyptic dreams but now she sees a figure in the dreams. She wonders if the figure is there to save the world or destroy it. The mystery we're been given since the first episode of the season is slowly unraveling. Mimete is annoying as ever and the monster.....ah yah let's talk about the monster/Daimon, shall we? Ok, since the monster's design usually matches the location, in this case, a planetarium, the monster would have something to do with stars, space, and planets. So we got U-Chouten annnnndddd...yeah check her out. Yes, she's wearing red star pasties and a very skimpy feather and star outfit. In other words, she looks like a stripper. I really have no idea on what the animators were thinking. The whole concept makes it seems that a bunch of horny old men is working on the show. Did everyone on the job just took one look at the monster with pasties and was like "yep, kids wouldn't mind" I mean, I know people in Japan are more comfortable with nudity, but seriously U-Chouten obviously looks like a stripper. There's no way anyone could be that naive. They must have known the implications are not subtle at all. So I'm not surprised that when season 3 came to be dubbed in English, the dubbers did this to U-Chouten. Ok, enough with the monster, let's talk about the episode's climax. So as the monster attacks, Hotaru gets another seizure, and suddenly she emits a glowing powerful aura that stops the monster completely. Here it is revealed that Hotaru is Sailor Saturn. And while we don't see Saturn in her full outfit, just seeing Hotaru stance and her badass strength is amazing. The outer senshi tries to take Hotaru down, but Chibi-Usa refuses to allow Hotaru to be murder. Seriously, the outer senshi could be single-minded. Are they actually ok with killing Hotaru in front of Chibi-Usa, knowing she and Hotaru are good friends? Jesus, that's dark. This further separates the outer senshi and inner senshi, as the question of sacrifice is brought out once again. Pretty deep stuff for a kid's program. This is why season 3 is so strong. It's not just a matter of bad vs. good, it's also a matter of moral beliefs and ethics. The episode is a game changer because now the senshi have to deal with the idea that one of their own is an enemy. Powerful stuff.
- What's the Plot?: The Sailor Guardians travel to D Point to fight Queen Beryl, where they face her toughest youma yet, the DD Girls and the Inner Guardians are killed protecting Sailor Moon./ With her friends dead, Sailor Moon is transported inside the Dark Kingdom to face Queen Beryl and the brainwashed Prince Endymion.-Another two episode review but it's the last. So here is the best episode of the 90's Sailor Moon anime. Season 1 definitely was a masterpiece season. Sure it had its flaws, but the ending was strong and didn't wimp out. The episode where the senshi die, (yes die as in dead) was groundbreaking. The battle between the senshi and the DD girls was epic. The DD girls are some of my favorite monsters. Sure they are a bunch of chicks in bikinis and they could fly but they are crazy dangerous. Each of the senshi must deal with the DD Girls. And yes each of the senshi dies in the process. Apparently, when the episode first aired, some parents weren't so pleased with the deaths. In the issues of Animage 1993, one radio DJ claim he was so shocked at what he saw and his daughter became traumatized after viewing the episode. Another parent who wrote to the Animage issue wrote that she worried that if children see their favorite characters die and brought back to life, they wouldn't see death as permanent. I'm not sure if this debate ever grew into a large controversial discussion, but it does show the power TV has on children. Since I was a preteen when I got into Sailor Moon, I didn't get that shocked to see the senshi dead. I think deep down I had the hunch that the senshi would be coming back, but if I had been a young child, I'm sure I would have many questions about the senshi's deaths. So back to the episode. Usagi is torture throughout the entire episode on seeing her friends get knocked off. She pretty much almost has a meltdown but Mars slaps her back to reality. Mars fight against the final DD girl was badass. Just as it looks like the DD girl has killed Mars and tries to fly, Mars grabs her and shouts out "I'm not done yet". Damn, that was so crazy cool! I loved it! With Mars gone, it's now down to Sailor Moon. This episode was powerful. It had great character development, showcasing the senshi's desire to save the world and Usagi. It had great fighting scenes. And it was just the best supporting episode to the last episode. So let's get to the next episode/So now Sailor Moon must face both Queen Beryl and the Evil Prince Endymion. Overall I love this episode. The power of love does overcome evil. It vastly differs from the manga. In order to save Mamoru, Sailor Moon stabs him and herself and the light that had enter Mamoru reenters with the Silver Crystal, that is how Sailor Moon gets Mamoru back to normal. In the anime, she shows him the orgel or the star locket and the light and melody gets him back to normal. This pisses off Beryl, and she tries to stab them with a giant crystal but Mamoru deflects her attack and she is injured. In the manga, at this point, Beryl had already been dead thanks to Sailor Venus (Another reason why Venus is badass). Only in the anime does Beryl and Metalia merge into one being called "Super Beryl" (Not the best name but she is what she is). Super Beryl looks basically like regular Beryl, just bigger, different color dress and hair. Doesn't exist in the manga but honestly, I don't mind. The fight between Sailor Moon and Super Beryl was awesome. Literally light vs dark, the evil queen versus the good pure princess. If only Disney's Snow White ended like this. At first, it seems that the Beryl/Metalia queen is going to win, but Sailor Moon/Princess Serenity's friends (in spirit form) come to her aid and add extra power to the crystal. It's the best favorite image of Princess Serenity and the sailor senshi. It's an awesome episode because it was a great climax. Usagi shows great agency as she saves Mamoru, fights the main bad guy and saves the world. In the end everyone loses their memory. Not a big fan of that idea but it is better than "it was all a dream" ending. If this had been an only season type of deal, it would have been sucky if they kept "losing their memories" plot point. Likely there were more seasons to come. Another change we see is the ending episode song. This song was playing at the climax when Princess Serenity was fighting Super Beryl. Originally it was the theme song "Moonlight Densetsu" which would have made sense because usually, animes would play the opening theme song during climactic moments of the series. However, in the DIC dub, it was changed to a pop song "Carry On" by Jennifier Chi. Honestly, I don't mind the change. The dub song was catchy and the lyrics match the moment in the episode. The best credit I could give the DIC dubbing is that the songs were originally made for the dubbing for the anime. So the lyrics always add some mention of what's in the series. So overall, the ending episode was a success. It had a good climax, a decent ending and it gave the season an great sense of comfort of knowing the heroes won. That is why it is part of my number one!
Well, that's all I have to say about the episodes. I hope the episodes I listed are your favorites too. While I know there were over 200 episodes in the original SM anime, these were the episodes I enjoyed the most. Do I still rewatch the original anime? of course, I do! So now I want to do a review for each season of the original anime! That's right folks, a detailed review of all the seasons. I will discuss the good, the bad and the ugly plus the nerdy of the whole Sailor Moon Anime Franchise! See you later!
